Phylogeny explains why less therapeutically redundant plant species are not necessarily facing greater use pressure

چکیده

Understanding which factors influence medicinal plant species selection and harvest or use pressure can provide valuable insights for sustainable management of natural resources conservation efforts. The utilitarian redundancy model, a theoretical framework in ethnobotany, suggests that are therapeutically redundant fulfil similar therapeutic functions within traditional ethnomedicine less likely to be under greater pressure. However, species' evolutionary relatedness the preference certain over others treat given illness directly affect how is diffused across several groups species. These may alter strength redundancy–use relationship. Medicinal same experience despite their level because they preferred, where most people select these preferably other equally available treatment. Furthermore, closely related evolutionarily more harvested not unique but share traits such as secondary chemistry with medicinally important make them prone being harvested. We investigate effects redundancy, value, on Shipibo-Konibo community Paoyhan Peruvian Amazon region. used phylogenetic generalized least squares models identify significant predictors 62 cited by 30 participants fulfilling 31 ethnomedicine. Why Some Plant Species Are Rare

Biodiversity, including plant species diversity, is threatened worldwide as a result of anthropogenic pressures such as an increase of pollutants and climate change. Rare species in particular are on the verge of becoming extinct. It is still unclear as to why some plant species are rare and others are not. Are they rare due to: intrinsic reasons, dispersal capacity, the effects of management o...

Why Science Is Not Necessarily Self-Correcting.

The ability to self-correct is considered a hallmark of science. However, self-correction does not always happen to scientific evidence by default. The trajectory of scientific credibility can fluctuate over time, both for defined scientific fields and for science at-large. History suggests that major catastrophes in scientific credibility are unfortunately possible and the argument that "it is...

Japanese Puns Are Not Necessarily Jokes

In English, “puns” are usually perceived as a subclass of “jokes”. In Japanese, however, this is not necessarily true. In this paper we investigate whether Japanese native speakers perceive dajare (puns) as jooku (jokes). We first summarize existing research in the field of computational humor, both in English and Japanese, focusing on the usage of these two terms. This shows that in works of J...

Tighter Variational Bounds are Not Necessarily Better

We provide theoretical and empirical evidence that using tighter evidence lower bounds (ELBOs) can be detrimental to the process of learning an inference network by reducing the signal-to-noise ratio of the gradient estimator. Our results call into question common implicit assumptions that tighter ELBOs are better variational objectives for simultaneous model learning and inference amortization...
